Gloomy is a figurative oil painting on stretched canvas (36"x48"), embellishments on the eyes create a reflective 3D look. It is an original from the five piece series 'Melodramatic' conceptualized and painting in 2023. Currently it is on display at the Marianne van Silfhout Gallery in Brockville, Ontario, in the group show Spectrums. Artist Statement: Painted in oils on canvas, Gloomy is a figurative piece inspired by commedia dell-arte and self-perception. The figure takes up most of the canvas space appearing to be pushing up against a barrier between the viewer and itself. In appearance the character is inspired by Pierrot, an archetype defined by sadness. Gloomy is a visual representation of internalized resentment, how it feels to be called a downer. Gloomy is a word often used to describe the depressed with a negative connotation altering the way one may interact with and experience the world.
