Sculptural painting on canvas using metallic acrylic paint, broken glass, shattered mirror, silver and silver holographic glitter, handmade texture paste, acrylic gloss medium, rubber cement This painting explores the pressure for femme bodies to appear in a particular way through the idea of the “Vagazzle”. The Vagazzle is a way to decorate one’s vulva by removing all pubic hair, and gluing Swarovski crystals or other gems to their pubic area. Vagazzling was popularized by actor Jennifer Love Hewitt who encouraged all femme audience members to “vagazzle their vajayjays.” My interest in this way of decorating oneself is particularly because it appears quite beautiful, although can cause harm to one’s body, as many other popular expectations on femmes bodies. Some of the medical issues that may occur due to this can be bruising or cuts during sexual intercourse, allergic reactions from the glue, or bacterial infection due to not cleaning the skin properly. I chose to include mediums that are reflective similar to crystals and gems to resemble the Vagazzle although I wanted to use sharp objects such as the shattered mirror and broken glass which immediately feel dangerous. I wanted to show the vulva posed in the position as if one’s legs were spread open, and close up, and incredibly oversized to propose a sense of threat.
