Georgia dusk and the turpentine woods makes reference to the poem "Mulatto" by revered Harlem Renaissance writer, poet and playwright Langston Hughes. After reading much of Hughes' poetry I was particularly drawn to this poem. Like myself Hughes has a complex ancestry, His maternal grandmother Mary Patterson was of African-American, French, English and Native American descent. likewise My ancestral heritage is British, Ghanian and Italian. I feel that representation is important not only in the realms of art but also in the world as a whole, mulatto though viewed as being a derogatory and archaic word was a word I would hear through much of my youth. Hearing this poem provided me with a sense of solace knowing that there are others like me expressing their own artistic expressions.
