Painting is my vocation, after more than 4 decades at my easel, I feel only now I’m scratching the surface of what my physical and emotional energy needs to create.
I mainly paint Plein Air, because for me everything comes from the earth the sun, the rain.
I live where Canada’s Gold Rush started, Dawson City, Yukon, and I never tire of painting her beauty, even on cloudy days.
For me the right light is like a jewel, I know a painting works when it creates its own light.

For me, an artist should always be evolving, especially as a painter, you should be getting better and better, and you should see the change. If the painter is doing the same thing as 20 years ago, something is wrong - he’s stagnant. To get to where I want to go I’ve expanded what I do. My first love will always be painting and portraying the iconic beauty of Canada’s north. But I now I work as a sculptor and I’ve honed my traditional birch-bark canoe-building skills — I’m one of the very few left in our nation — and I hope this sets me apart as a sui generis, a truly unique and authentic artist. I’ve found combining these skills with painting makes my work more layered and textured, there is more of a tension between the elements, and this of course makes it more interesting for the viewer.
In recent years, my love of people, landscape, colour and light have taken me to the Patagonia region of Argentina, there my palette becomes lighter and more luminous. My teachers have been the great master’s van Gogh for his originality and spontaneity and of course the Group of Seven, particularly Tom Thomson for the same reasons.
