Inspired by Sebastian Burdon's "pop art" style sculpture, Riot of Liberty attacks the very symbol of freedom in the USA: the Statue of Liberty. The torch, synonymous with progress in the work of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1886), is thrown here by the Statue. This painting was made just before the 2020 US elections, where the degree of polarization has reached a critical point. Shortly after, Le Capitole (Washington D.C.) was the target of a banned demonstration organized by far-right groups. Through this work, the author wished to highlight a symbol, a monument, and to emphasize that even this was not a guarantee of stability in respect of our most fundamental values. The human, animal and imperfect mind can quickly tip the scales one way or the other, and throw an entire civilization into the abyss it has paved itself.
