Born in Brasília (Brazil) and based in Montreal (Canada), Tatyani Quintanilha is known for her dark soft pastels drawings which depict her inner view of social human relations, especially regarding to the human bodies and values.

Since childhood she is interested in the figurative, especially the human figure and its fantastic or symbolic representations. Her adolescence was marked by chronic kidney disease and several periods of social withdrawal for health care, which remain to this day, and where drawing plays an essential role. She graduated in Fine Arts and postgraduate in Analytical Psychology.

Her work is disturbing, causes fear in some people and reflection in others. Dry pastel, charcoal and pencils on large-format crumpled paper refer to raw and primitive, where we can find expressionism and existentialism. Her main influences are Francisco Goya, Frida Kahlo, Francis Bacon, Edvard Munch, Antoni Tàpies and René Magritte.

I was born in Brasília (Brazil) and now I live in Montreal (Canada). I draw portraits, self-portraits, personal narratives dealing with life/death, and reflections about medical and political power.

To me, the paper may represent the body and the drawing the mind or the soul. Made of dark colours, the drawings are mainly made in black and white dry pastels on paper. The paper is often deteriorated (beaten, crumpled, and torn) by me, to generate texture, movement and drama to the representations.

Since childhood, I like the drawing the human figure and the Arts have a healing power on me. My life was marked by diseases, surgeries, and emotional traumas, but also by love, generosity, and faith (not religion).

I hold a 4.5 years BA in Fine Arts and I’m also postgraduate in Analytical Psychology. The psychanalyses really help me to get deeper into the symbolical world. Francisco Goya, Francis Bacon, Antoni Tàpies, and René Magritte are some of my influences.
