Inspired by the expression that says you can't "see the forest for the trees", Paul thought of these trees as bars keeping you in from what could be peaceful and serene or barren and lonely. This work was a winner in the 2016 London (UK) International Creative Competition. //////////////// In his photo-based sculptures, the closest shapes to the viewer are raised, while further objects lower as they go deeper into space. When viewing the photo-based sculpture directly, the images look more two dimensional or flat because the various heights cannot be seen. As the viewer moves around the sculpture, the space and perspectives change – the lighting creates odd shadows that do not match the image’s two dimensional suggestions. They become three-dimensional abstractions, forcing the viewer to recognize the design and the balance of shapes within the image.
