Nelson Brian's journey from the vibrant streets of Manila, the Philippines, to the serene landscapes of Edmonton, Canada, is as colorful and textured as his art. Brian was born in Manila and grew up in one of the poorest areas of Pasay City, the fourth of six siblings in a hard-working yet economically challenged family. Despite these obstacles, his parents dedicated themselves to ensuring he received a good education, which culminated in a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Lyceum of the Philippines.

Interestingly, art was not always the central focus of Brian's life. He only began painting in late 2016, the year he got married. His first art piece was a heartfelt portrayal of his and his husband Brian's feet, a symbol of their journey together. What started as a simple hobby transformed into a passionate endeavor. Initially, Brian drew inspiration from the internet, but as his confidence grew, so did his imagination and artistic vision.

Without any formal artistic connections or background in his family, Brian's training and skill development were entirely self-taught. He relied heavily on YouTube tutorials and frequented art exhibits to hone his craft. Despite holding a degree in Economics and later achieving honors in Health Care Aide from Robinson College in Edmonton, artistic expression remained a significant outlet for him.

Post-graduation, Brian's career took a variety of paths. He began working as a janitor in a fast-food chain and climbed the ranks to become an Assistant Product Manager. He also served in a Non-Profit Organization in the Philippines focused on food processing and export before moving to Canada in 2008 as a Temporary Foreign Worker. There, Brian worked an array of jobs, from Food Counter Attendant to Shop Supervisor, and from Porter to Customer Service Associate. It was during these varied and challenging roles that Brian found solace in painting, using it as a stress reliever amidst his busy schedule. Today, he works as a Front Desk Clerk, managing to paint during his overnight shifts.

Brian’s artwork is deeply inspired by the beauty of nature, life experiences, and a profound love for animals. His creative process is as much about the journey as the destination. Whether he’s traveling and soaking in the beauty of oceans, beaches, and colorful mountain scenes, or selecting the perfect palette of acrylics, watercolors, and pastels, each piece of art becomes a living testament to his experiences and observations.

His unique technique—a seamless combination of various color palettes and mediums—evolved through endless hours of watching tutorials and attending art exhibitions. This innovative style has rendered his work both distinctive and captivating. His projects often bring the vividness of birds, dogs, and water to life, making them some of his most rewarding creations.

Influenced by the likes of Picasso and Van Gogh, Brian’s work reflects a deep admiration for these masters while retaining his originality. Though he is not formally connected to any artist organizations or guilds, his art speaks volumes on its own.

Cooking, baking, singing, and dancing are among Brian’s non-artistic hobbies, bringing an additional layer of creativity and joy to his life. Through his work, he channels his values of appreciation for nature and life, aiming to make his art not just a personal expression but also a universal language. While he’s yet to showcase his work in major galleries or earn widespread recognition, Brian remains steadfast in his pursuit, believing that art plays a crucial role in society by offering solace and inspiration.
