Biography

Laura Berman is a photographic artist transplanted from Toronto to the rural Ontario countryside. Her early training was as a painter at the New School of Art in Toronto. Later studying Landscape Architecture, she worked as a designer, garden educator and graphic artist before turning to photography full time in 2006, practicing fine art and editorial photography of gardens, farms, food and their creators. She now concentrates primarily on farm animals as her subject matter.

Artistic approach

My work focuses on our relationship with and understanding of animals. Through the integration of photography and digital painting I create images that convey emotions and individuality more than photography alone can, offering the viewer the opportunity to recognize that animals have inner lives and to see them as ‘some-one’ not as ‘some-thing’.
