"TO TEAR, TO MEND" is an artwork that deals with the continual degradation of our environment. Climate change and global warming are significant issues that are widely discussed around the world, and are ultimately reflected in the piece. TO TEAR, TO MEND incorporates single-use plastic, tissues, and plastic scraps which are embedded in the paint. This gesture is done to highlight the waste that is polluting the most important entity on earth; nature. Although this work has a dark tone, there is also an aspect of hope. The daisies that push through the soil represent the idea that nature is a powerful force. The words "to tear" and "to mend" are seen at the bottom extremities of the painting, which are words from the Ecclesiastes 3:7 of the Old Testament. These words represent the cyclical nature of earth's death and renewal. However, in order to preserve this natural cycle, we must tend to the needs of the earth.
